Listed #1 in the catalog of the artist's work from the exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1927. This special exhibition on John Ross Key opened January 15, 1927. Turak Gallery has a copy of the photograph showing the  painting on the wall at the Smithsonian.

Grandson of Francis Scott Key and great-grandson of John Ross Key, of Revolutionary fame, who recruited, equipped and drilled a company of troops for the Revolutionary War.

The artist was born in Hagerstown, MD. and his early life was passed in Washington, D.C. During the Civil War he was a lieutenant with the Confederate Engineers, serving as a mapmaker in Charleston, S.C. and Richmond, VA.
