Grandson of Francis Scott Key and great-grandson of
John Ross Key, of Revolutionary fame, who recruited, equipped and
drilled a
company of troops for the Revolutionary War.
The artist was born in Hagerstown, MD.
and his early
life was passed in Washington, D.C. During the Civil War he was a
lieutenant
with the Confederate Engineers, serving as a mapmaker in Charleston,
S.C. and
Richmond, VA.
